Phased Array "There is a particular variation for the use of two near coincident figure-of-eight pattern microphones, known as the Faulkner Array. Its originator, classical music recording engineer, Tony Faulkner, described to me what it offered him some years ago when there was a particularly difficult acoustic he was working in with two figure-of-eight mics. Trying the usual options of variously angled, vertically coincident or widely spaced, he came across a solution reducing the acoustic contribution yet still being at an optimal distance from the performers. He arranged them as a 'phased array' with 20cm spacing and had them both facing forwards in parallel. It solved the day and since then he has found the array useful in a few similar situations."
